San Diego High Has Sophmore Star
May 29, 2008
If you haven’t heard yet San Diego has a budding future NBA lottery picky walking down the camera filled halls of San Diego High School. I’m talking about 6’9, 240 pound sophomore standout Jeremy Tyler. Almost every major D-1 college in the country is salivating over this 16-year-old power forward who helped lead the Cavers to a 23-5 record last year, capturing their first California Interscholastic Federation Section championship. If that isn’t a mouth full to say, try Kentucky, UCLA, USC, Florida, Georgetown, and North Carolina just to name a few of the schools knocking down his door. Last season Tyler averaged 18 points, 14.5 rebounds, and 7.7 blocks per game, while shooting over 50% from the field. Tyler is an absolute beast in the paint and quick enough to take his man off the dribble, though both he and SD High’s coach Kenny Roy admit his handle is suspect, Tyler is still the #1 sophomore recruit in the nation.
In January of this year a film crew decided to record the life3 of Jeremy Tyler for a TV network, similar to the documentary of Sebastian Telfair a few years back. Did they pick the right kid? It looks like he is not going to let anybody down. Last season he and his teammates played all over the country. They hit all the big tourney’s including; the Amare Stoudemire Classic in Lakeland FLA, the Big Apple classic in NYC, and the Neosha Classic in MO to name a few. The team traveled as much as a D-1 college team and that makes for some pretty good footage.
When asked about his likely spot in the NBA he said; “Reaching the next level is a dream that you really fight for. I know it’s not going to come over night. I know I could get there, but only if I take the right steps.” Ok sounds like they not only picked a rising super start, but a pretty smart 16 year old to boot. Tyler has not yet let the media frenzy get to his head and he understands the importance of being humble. When asked about the overwhelming amount of press covering his every move, he simply replied, “All these people are just doing their jobs.” As for the suffocating examination of the people watching his every step he smiled and said, “If I saw a seven-footer walking around I’d be watching too.”
Jeremy Tyler and the San Diego High Cavers are looking forward to another season of big wins, lots of traveling, and more high-flying dunks for the JT highlight reel. Coach Roy hopes to add the Kingwood classic to the list of primetime basketball tournaments in the 08-09 season. If you haven’t seen this kid play, make sure you get down to a SDH hoops game this winter and watch Jeremy Tyler’s size 18 shoe power up and down the court.
