Tips For Being a Successful Official
How to administer a free throw
- The official who called the foul goes to the score
- The other ref initiates the “switch” - gets the ball and lines the players up.
- Whichever is to be the new Trail will be opposite the scorer.
- The Lead on scorer’s side of the court must be out of the shooter’s eyesight
- The lead official will now administer all of the free throw attempts.
Trail’s Responsibilities
- Stand near sideline even with the foul line extended. (Opposite score table)
- Make sure you can see the shooter’s feet on the line.
- Make sure to watch for any lane violations that occur in the key opposite of your position.
- Make sure no players that are outside of the three-point line charge hoop before ball hits the rim.
- If shot is an air ball or hits a support you must blow whistle and call violation.
- Put your hand up with an open palm on last shot.
- If last shot is missed you must chop clock to to start time.
The Lead will handle all free-throw shots.

Lead’s Responsibilities
- After reporting the foul to the scorekeeper, go down to the baseline to make sure the bottom of the key is filled by the defense
- You are responsible for the handling of all free throw shots
- Stand in key and say 1,2,or 3 shots
- Signal with fingers how many shots.
- Bounce pass ball to shooter at waist level.
- Stand out of the shooter’s eyesight. (opposite trail official)
- You are responsible for all lane violations opposite of your position.
- On last free throw back up to normal lead position (3-5′ off baseline).
- If last shot is made put arm closest to sideline up with an open palm, begin 5 second count with other hand. When ball is touched in bounds by a player chop clock to begin game time.

Once the ball is “alive” do not talk. If a player asks you “how many?” just put up one or two fingers.
Once the ball is “alive,” defense cannot ask for a timeout.
Free Throw Violations
- If defense (only) violates, hold fist at side and blow whistle only if the shot is missed.
- If offense violates, blow the whistle immediately.
- For a double violation, blow your whistle (cancel first shot, or go to possession arrow if last shot).
