No More “Hells Bells?”

November 11, 2008

HoffmanLast season the San Diego Padres where pretty much the worst team in baseball. They hit just .250 as a team, they finished dead last in the worst division in Baseball, and they were 36 games below 500% Can things get any worse? Yes they can, much, much worse. Padres ace Jake Peavy is a free-agent and is being wooed by big market teams that have a shot at making the World Series. Their division rivals, the LA Dodgers, are throwing serious cash at Manny. And now Kevin towers has pulled the offer meant to re-sign all time saves leader and local hero, Trevor Hoffman. Ok, ok Hoffman’s numbers were down last season and he is 41, but last season the only enjoyment San Diego fans had was dancing and shouting to Hoffman’s trade mark entry song, Hells Bells. What are Padres fans going to do now? Well they certainly aren’t going to show up before the 3rd or 4th inning, and they won’t have a reason to stay past the 7th.

Why is Kevin Towers upset? Why can’t they meet and talk it over? Don’t they want “Trevor Time” to retire a Padre?
What do you say Kevin?

Seems like for the sake of the fans and for the sake of a loyal hard working Padre you could think of something. But maybe we are all happy not commenting about the Padres because that would remind us of how bad they were last year, and how much worse they may be this year.

No, Kevin Towers did not offer much in the way of “comments” when asked about the decision to pull the 4 million dollar offer to, baseballs all time save leader.

The deal would have paid Hoffman 4 million for the 09’ season and included a club option for another 4 million in 2010, with no buy-out. The offer was pulled after Hoffman’s agent Thurman did not respond to the deal. It is reported that Hoffman asked to meet with Moores and Alderson to discuss the direction of the team as well as Hoffman’s expected roll. The 41-year-old Hoffman has amassed 554 saves and has a life time era of 2.78. His numbers were down last year, but so was everything else for the Padres. When you are 36 games below 500% for the season there are fewer opportunities to save games. Besides his great numbers Hoffman has been a fantastic role model and active member within the San Diego community since 1993. He was recently honored with the “Branch Rickey” award for community service, and there is no doubt that he is a fan favorite at every game. If the Padres refuse to talk with Hoffman there are already GM’s lining up to offer Hoffman a deal.

San Diego High Has Sophmore Star

May 29, 2008

If you haven’t heard yet San Diego has a budding future NBA lottery picky walking down the camera filled halls of San Diego High School. I’m talking about 6’9, 240 pound sophomore standout Jeremy Tyler. Almost every major D-1 college in the country is salivating over this 16-year-old power forward who helped lead the Cavers to a 23-5 record last year, capturing their first California Interscholastic Federation Section championship. If that isn’t a mouth full to say, try Kentucky, UCLA, USC, Florida, Georgetown, and North Carolina just to name a few of the schools knocking down his door. Read more

Lakers let Manu & Spurs Back into Series

May 27, 2008

Spurs rally back from 30 point beat down in game 2, and win at home.  The Lakers had their foot on the throat of the San Antonio Spurs but Manu Ginobili would not let them submit.  The Lakers went into San Antonio with a commanding 2-0 series lead and a huge psychological advantage over the seemingly, “too old” Spurs.  Game 1 saw the Spurs blow a 20-point lead and loose to, a red-hot shooting, Kobe Bryant second half performance. Game 2 was a 30-point blow out in the Lakers favor.  The Spurs were out played, over matched, and looked old while they played in the Staples Center.  Then they flew home and re-grouped. Read more

The Jim MacLaren Story

May 22, 2008

Sports history is chock-full of classic stories of athletes overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds; Two years ago, underdog, 5’6 Nate Robinson won the NBA slam-dunk contest. In the 2007 World Series, Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell won the MVP award just a few years after nearly loosing his battle with cancer. In 2002 an Ethiopian cross-country runner won a marathon in Italy by over 9 minutes, he ran the entire race barefoot. In Greece Athena high school in New Jersey a 17 year old known simply as “J-Mac” scores 20 points in the last few minutes of a Varsity basketball game. An amazing feat considering he was only the team manager, had never played in a game before, and he suffers from severe Autism.
